Built in 1929 on an island in the Mill River, the English Station power plant once symbolized New Haven’s economic and industrial might. But since it stopped operating two decades ago, this iconic hulking mass on the city’s skyline has become the king of New Haven brownfields, a symbol of the city’s postwar economic decline.

For 63 years, English Station was a coal and oil-fired power plant owned and operated by United Illuminating Co. It was taken offline in 1992.

Reminders Regarding This Sunday's Columbus Day Festival

Festival Update from Andy Ross:
There have been a few additions to the Columbus Day Festival scheduled for Sunday, October 7 from 12pm to 5pm in Wooster Square. Miss Connecticut will be on hand from 2 to 4 for autographs and pictures and we will be broad casing the Giants VS Browns football game on a large screen TV. Also there will be a movie at 6:30 on the park. We are showing the original version of Willy & the Chocolate Factory.

Here are some other highlights: Pony rides, petting zoo, big bouncer obstacle course, Hay maze, Police and fire equipment for the kids to sit in, a professional Childress singer, A Wine tasting by Wine Thief, over 10 great food vendors, two live bands and much more.

Please note that:

Roads including Chapel, Wooster Place and Greene St will be closed from 11am on Sunday, Oct 7 for the Columbus Day Festival.

An earlier post here looked at whether or not New Haven would be in violation of state law by not appointing a charter revision commission this year. But it looks like we may be getting a charter revision commission this year after all:

Good day. One of the next major processes involving the Board of Aldermen is the Charter Revision Process. Part of that process is nominating members of the commission and also suggesting ideas that the commission will be directed to consider.

Therefore, by way of the is email, all alders are being requested to email to alucas@newhavenct.net any nominees that you have for members of the commission, and any issues that you want the commission to consider on or before Thursday, September 20th so that they can be considered for inclusion in the draft resolution that may be communicated to the Board the October Board meeting.

Also for your reference please find herewith a brief explanation of the charter revision process and a sample timetable based on having the charter revision referendum at the same time as a general election. ( Keep in mind that the referendum does not have to be during an election, so this is just one possible scenario.)

Need an Absentee Ballot for the August 14 Primary Election?

Are you going to be away on August 14 and need to request an absentee ballot for the primary election that day?

There is a two-step procedure for voting by absentee.

You can download an absentee ballot application at the Secretary of the State’s website.

Or you can call the New Haven City Clerk’s office (203 946-8346) and have them send you an absentee ballot application. You can also fill out the application in person at the Clerk’s office.

When you return the application you will be sent (as long as it is within 30 days of the election) the actual absentee ballot.

Update on Aldermanic Redistricting

Another aldermanic redistricting hearing was held this week. The New Haven Register and Yale Daily news covered the hearing. (The New Haven Independent covered an earlier hearing last week.) Some of the issues that have come up are better aligning ward lines with neighborhood boundaries, nesting wards in state legislative districts to minimize the number of voting districts, and eliminating ward boundaries that run down the middle of streets. What do you think?

The next hearing will be on April 4.
